22.06.10

The children in Year 5 follow an ongoing motto, ‘Work Hard…Play Hard’ and after their recent Mock Examination they were treated to an end of year trip to the Cheshire County Show in Arley.

The sun shone down on over 250 acres of activities, displays and demonstrations, with the children and teachers relishing every moment.  The children’s behaviour was impeccable as they took part in cheese tasting, observed the judging of rare breed animals and participated in activities run by local secondary school pupils.

A highlight from the trip was watching Mr Booth’s sister triumph with her prized British Saddleback Pig, with Year 5 providing the cheers and clapping from the sidelines.

Mr Booth, Mrs Cotton and Mrs Wright were extremely proud of the children for how they represented Forest so grandly, even during their extra treat at the old fashioned fairground!

Summer Music Exams

Congratulations to Phoebe D [Year 5], Beth G [Year 4], Briony H [Year 6] and James M [Year 4]who completed Associated Board Music examinations this week.

Year 5 pupils Phoebe and Beth met Ms Wellings in Manchester on Saturday morning for a bright and early Theory Exam, after which both pupils commented on how confident they felt about their potential results.

Unfortunately, though, they will have to wait until after school finishes for the summer to find out how well they did!

Another pupil who will have to wait is Briony!  She took her Grade 1 Singing Examination this week, presenting a lovely programme including "Where is Love?" and "Grandfather Clock".

Year 4 pupil James M found out his comments immediately after the Piano Prep Test which he took this week.  The examiner was very impressed with James' control of dynamics (louds and softs) and commented particularly on his "fine technique".

Congratulations James and good luck to Phoebe, Beth and Briony!

Phoebe Creates Shoe-nique Design for Manchester Midnight Walk

21.06.10

Phoebe in Year Five celebrates winning a Manchester-wide competition and shows off the fantastic shoes she designed in support of the Manchester Midnight Walk.

Phoebe received her uniquely designed walking pumps from one of the UK' s Top Operatic Tenors Martin Toal. She designed the pumps to celebrate the upcoming Manchester Midnight Walk in aid of St Ann's Hospice recreated by artist Stuart Easton of Easton Arts.

Primary school pupils across greater Manchester were asked to design the perfect pair of pumps to sit in their own shop window, at designer hotspot the Triangle Shopping Centre, in the build up to the walk which takes place on 2 July 2010.

Her winning shoes will now sit alongside those designed by celebrities including Alesha Dixon, Alexandra Burke and Tess Daly to help support the Manchester Midnight walk.

Phoebe's design wowed the competition judge, Key 103 presenter and St Ann's patron, Chelsea Norris, who says she was blown away by Phoebe's unique design which celebrates Manchester's iconic landmarks.

Mr Hyde comments:

"We are extremely proud that Phoebe's design was selected to sit alongside the other "Star Shoes" created for the Manchester Midnight Walk. We try to get the children involved in creative projects wherever possible and this one thing really stood out as being something different, plus it's for a great cause!"

Maths Workshop

11.06.10

Years 4 and 5 participated in a Maths Masterclass with Mrs Heathcock from Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. The children enjoyed investigating a range of mathematical tasks.

Phoebe in Year Five enjoyed writing about her experience:

Last week some of Year 4 and Year 5 were treated to a maths workshop. We were put into groups of three and were given the task of completing a magic square.

This sounds simple, however all we were given was a magic number of 36 and 12 clues. We had to work together in our groups to try and complete the task.

The clues included many statistics such as; square numbers, cubed numbers, triangular numbers, odd numbers and even numbers. It took us all a while to complete the task but overall we all had fun!

A big thank-you to the two teachers from Altrincham Grammar School for Girls for running the workshop.

Forest Garden Day

17.05.10

The weather was kind (most of the day) to all who turned out for the Forest Garden Day on Saturday. Children and parents were able to bring along their plants and put them into the school gardens enabling them to watch these grow over the year.

A wide variety of plants were donated and planted all over the school grounds. A lot of hard work and energy was put into the gardens by all those who turned out on Saturday and Forest would like to a say a big thank you to you all.

Science Assembly

17.05.10

On Friday 14th May, a company called Sci-Tech composed an assembly involving a wide variety of science experiments, from freezing flowers to exploding bottles! They also had dry ice (which is basically frozen carbon dioxide) and used it to make bubbles float in mid air.

Also, they had mixed warm water with green water so it bubbled and had a mist on top of the beaker. Three volunteers had the opportunity to drink the bubbling green water, so they did.

At the end of assembly, Philip performed a science magic trick where he placed a blown up balloon into liquid nitrogen. The freezing cold temperature compressed the air in the balloon making it appear as if it wasn't blown up. Then he removed the balloon, and without him blowing it up it started to inflate as the air was warm around it.

The most memorable thing from the whole afternoon must be the bottle explosion. The Upper School were taken outside and asked to listen for the CO2 in the bottle but Philip made it explode, which in turn made us all jump out of our skins!

Thanks to all at SciTech for a wonderful assembly.

Terrific Timbres

17.05.10

Years 1 and 2 pupils recently completed some excellent work on musical timbre.  Timbre is a tricky word to explain - the quality or tone 'colour' of sound - but the students quickly understood its meaning and explored different vocal timbres, saying hello in an 'ugly' voice, a 'smooth' voice, an 'excited' voice etc!

We then worked in groups to perform a wonderful poem about a character called 'Mahachagogo' who becomes hot, cold and sleepy, requiring the children to portray his feelings through their voices.

Just last week, we moved on to instrumental timbres, exploring the different tonal qualities of percussion instruments, before listening to the beautiful opening of Debussy's Prelude to 'The Afternoon of a Faun'.  The pupils listened intently to the flute solo and then described its timbre using the best adjectives (describing words) they thought would fit.  Who knew that Forest students had such excellent vocabulary?

As the final activity, the children drew a picture, each illustrating their chosen adjective for the flute timbre.  Well done Year 1 and Year 2 on fantastic work!

Girls Football

14.05.10

Forest Preparatory School entered its first ever girls football team yesterday in a tournament held at Brooklands Primary School. The girls had never played before as a team and for many of them this was their first ever experience of football.

However, despite this they played extremely well and should feel proud of their achievements.

Forest were entered in a tough group and played a total of 4 games - winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2. This meant we finished with a total of 4 points and finished a very respectable 3rd in the group, only narrowly missing out on the semi final. A super effort by all the girls and I can't wait till next year when we'll have had a little more practice. Well done girls!

Manor Adventure Week

06.05.10

To all at Manor Adventure,

Thank you very much for an amazing time at the Manor. I would like to thank all the instructors for making each and every activity as fun as possible.

The Manor Adventure was a whole new experience for me and it was an experience that I would enjoy to do again. The wide range of activities got me incredibly excited and let me try things that I never thought I’d get a chance to try. I especially enjoyed the abseiling, as it was both scary and fun. It was great when you got to
jump!

I’d like to thank Mr Hyde, Mr Tucker, Mr Booth and Mrs Mitchell. They
made the trip exceptionally fun for all of us (especially when they
fell in the lake!) I really enjoyed the trip to Blist Hill, as it was a great chance to see what life may have been like back in the Victorian Era. I think that we could have really benefited from this trip as our Year 6 History Topic is the Victorians.

Finally, I’d like to thank all my friends for pushing me on, helping me and just for having fun! I think that the experience of being able to do all those interesting and unusual activities- even if they were only tasters of what they were. All in all Manor Adventure was a brilliant place and given the chance I would definitely go again.

Yours Sincerely,
Connor Rutherford

Forest Gain Green Flag Status

05.05.2010

Forest Preparatory School achieved Green Flag status this week after a successful assessment by the Eco Awards Council. This award recognises the hard work and efforts by the school in creating a more eco friendly environment for the children at Forest. There are nearly 14,000 schools registered with the Eco Awards Council but only 7% of these have achieved this Green Flag accolade.

The assessor commented about many of the school strengths including; the vegetable gardens and the way in which these are utilised, the recent competitions for the RHS Flower Show and fund raising for a new green house as well as the awareness form the children to recycle materials in school and conserve electricity.

Above all it was the polite and well mannered children at Forest Prep School and the school's council team that impressed him the most so well done to you all!

Chicks Start to Hatch!

05.05.2010

After a long earned bank holiday weekend Year 6 were delighted to come back to school to see some of our new arrivals. The chicken eggs that have been housed in the Year 6 class room for the last 2 weeks have started to hatch open.

So far we have had 5 chicks hatch successfully and they have now been placed in our chicken coup. We hope to have a
few more join them over the coming week including some of the duck eggs we have!

Many of the the children at Forest Prep have paid a visit to see the chicks and if you would like to take a look for yourself feel free to call in and see Mr. Tucker in the Year 6 classroom.

A big thank you must go to Mr. Booth for organising the eggs and the chicken coup for Forest and also to Mrs Naik for her kind donation to school to make this wonderful experience possible.

Altrincham FC Mascots

24.04.10

On Saturday 24th April a number of Forest Prep School children were fortunate enough to be involved in Colin Little's last game for Altrincham FC. The lucky children involved were Amelia T, Sofia T, Sam C, Sam F, Jack F, Edward G, Ben T, Aaron O, Ben C and Kieren S.

As it was Altrincham FC's last game of the season the carnival atmosphere was apparent among the 1500 strong crowd. The Forest children were able to lead out the players onto the pitch in the glorious sunshine and be part of a magical day in Altrincham's history.

Thank you to the PA for supporting such a wonderful venture for the children of Forest once again.

Football Tournament at BTH

22.04.10

The football team went to play a tournament at BTH and  we played extremely well in all of our games.

In our first we won against the current Title holders Tyntesfield Primary School [1-0] with Ben T scoring our goal. Our next match was against Worthington Primary and we drew with them [2-2] although they scored in the last second. In our last game against Woodheys Primary we lost [1-0] although the boys fought very hard.

In the group stage we finished joint second with Worthington Primary as we finished on the same goal difference and also the same amount of goals scored so we played a play off against them.

Unfortunately, we lost [2-1] in a hard fought match. Overall it was a great performance from all of the team and we finished a respectable 6th out of 9 teams.

Exam Excellence

20.04.10

Forest pupils represented the school brilliantly and achieved excellent results in the recent Associated Board Music Examinations.

Jonathan P (Yr 3), Rebecca G (Yr 6) and Olivia B (Yr 6) successfully completed their Prep Test in Piano, after having only started learning the instrument in September, and Charlotte M (Yr 3) successfully completed her Prep Test in Singing. The Prep test is a non-graded examination aimed at giving students the opportunity to show their progress and receive constructive feedback on their technique and musical awareness.

Phoebe D (Yr 5) and Beth G (Yr 4) both took the Grade 1 Singing Examination and passed with flying colours.  Phoebe achieved a Distinction, (singing one song in German!) with the examiner commenting on her "sustained tone throughout each phrase, good breath control and an engaged characterisation" and Beth achieved a Merit for her "very promising young voice and committed presentation".

Congratulations to Jonathan, Rebecca, Olivia, Charlotte, Phoebe and Beth on their wonderful success!

Anti-Bullying Week: Cyber Bullying

22.03.10

Years 5 and 6 have been finding out more about cyber bullying. The children have been working hard to create a quiz and PowerPoint presentation.

What is cyber bullying?

Even though cyber bullying can't hurt someone physically, it leaves a person feeling emotionally and mentally stressed.

It involves taunting someone via the computer or by mobile phone: Sending viruses or signing onto an account just to collect personal data is a term of cyber bullying, as is sending someone an anonymous text message, taunting them.

The bully can access your mobile phone and your computer at any time, any place, anywhere. Those bullied can take ages to recover from the messages, even if they have blocked the sender.

Here, Year 5 are creating their cyber bullying quiz using PowerPoint

Please check back for the finished pieces of work.
