                                 Musical Marching!

One Friday night's homework, was to make and design a musical instrument. Over the period of a week, we could choose between a shaker, a drum or a stringed model. We evaluated in class after that we went down to the Reception to discussed it with them. We asked them to draw picture of it and play the instrument is as many different ways possible. To conclude we marched around the playground as a band. We played the instruments and then Reception played them. We had lots and lots of fun doing this and I am sure the whole class would love to do it again!

Mathematics Masterclass at Forest Preparatory School

Earlier today Forest held a 'Maths Masterclass'. Children from Forest Park and The Willows joined us to complete challenging work on codes with Mrs Heathcock, a maths teacher from Altrincham Girls’ Grammar School. We learned about Julius Caesar’s method of coding. Mrs Heathcock brought several sixth form students along to assist in case we needed help. The first activity was fun. We all got a piece of a jigsaw and were sorted into groups with the people who had the other pieces. When we made the jigsaw it looked fine but when you looked closely, it didn’t make sense. In my group there was a picture of a watermill yet if you looked closely, the water flowed uphill which isn’t possible, is it?

The second task was to decode a message using Julius Caesar’s method. I found it tricky but the sixth formers helped us all out which was handy because the codes got harder. Mrs Heathcock told us that in battles Julius Caesar sent two messages. The first one, once decoded, told the person how to decode the second message. After that we did the final task which I still haven’t finished yet! We had to decode a message with no sheet to give us help. Before I knew it the session had ended. I was really getting the hang of things and I am looking forward to the next session. Thank you Mrs Heathcock!

                             Inter House Hockey

The children at Forest Prep take part in a wide range of sporting
activities during their Games and P.E. lessons. This week saw the Inter-House Hockey tournament take place to see which House would come out on top. The children were split into Years 3/4 and Years 5/6 in their respective houses and competed against each other in a number of games. The hockey played was at a high level and the matches were all very close. The points accumulated for each result gave the overall standings:

                                      1st: Jordan
                                      2nd: Chorlton
                                      3rd: Kersal
                                      4th: Mimwood

                            Year 6 Shelter Project

In Year 6 we have been making shelters during our D.T. topic over the winter holidays. We have then been testing them and they have to withstand a number of tests.

The first test is withstanding the weight of 1 kg. The next test is 200 ml of water and the Lego people inside will be on a tissue and the tissue cannot get water on it. The third test is wind from all sides and the shelter can’t blow away or topple. The fourth test is comfort so our shelters needed lots of home comforts inside them.

As well as having to build our shelters we had to fill out an evaluation form that told Mr Tucker and everyone else in our class about what we used to make our shelters and how we constructed them. Throughout our shelter making people have used a wide variety of materials and we have really enjoyed making our shelters. It was a very fun project!

                             Forest Music Captain

Hello everyone,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the school music captain and to let you know about upcoming events in the school music calendar!

The singing season is now in full swing and started off last week with a fantastic performance by the school choir at a charity event held at Alderley Edge School for Girls. I think everyone who attended would agree that the choir were in fine voice that night and all looking very smart indeed.

Tonight, Thursday 1st December we will be performing at Manchester Cathedral. I know that this event is a popular one with both parents and grandparents, get us all feeling festive!

There are Carols in the Grounds on Monday 5th December, where the PA will be serving mulled wine and mince pies, a good excuse to indulge and on Wednesday 7th December we will be performing at the school Carol Service, held at North Cestrian Grammar School. So I suggest that you get your singing voices ready.
The Chamber Choir are busy too. Our first performance will be at the school Christmas Fair on Sunday 4th December at around 2pm.We have also been invited to sing at Speakman Court and Newhaven, both local retirement homes and it is really lovely to see how much the residents enjoy our visits. So, hopefully you will be able to hear us perform at one of these events to get you into the festive spirit.

Oh and don't forget the ever popular Young Voices which is now taking place in January. The whole choir will be rehearsing at 8am every Monday in January to make sure that we are ready to join in what is always a great show!

Hope to hear you singing along, loud voices please!!!

There was a song which was really catchy and helps you with your maths. There were just two people playing a lot of different characters. Years 2 - 6 watched this and I think everybody liked it. Cross Country News

RUN FOREST RUN!

Last Saturday, 16th October, Forest Prep had their biggest turn out ever for the cross country meeting at John Leigh Park.

29 of us ran our very best and we got some brilliant results. As one of the smallest schools there, we really punched above our weight. Particular mention should go to the 9 children from Year 3 who ran in this, their second race. I think they are really enjoying being able to represent the school and they do it so well. Jenny is certainly one to watch for future races.

Full results are on the web site but the top 4 placed runners on Saturday were Elizabeth and Charlie in the B races who came 8th and 5th respectively and Ellie and I who were 18th and 16th in the A races.

We have a great team spirit developing, all cheering each other on and it would be great to have 30 plus runners at the next race on 26th November. (Harry - Boys Games Captain)

FOREST ON FIRE!

Forest Prep started their league campaign on Thursday at Crossford
Bridge by playing their first two league fixtures of the season.

Their first game was against local team Forest Park and Forest performed very well and ran out 5 -1 winners!

Confidence was high and the team went into their second game against Lime Tree full of high spirits and it showed in the outcome. Unbelievably, they played even better than the first match and strolled to an 8 - 0 win which puts Forest Prep School top of the Sale & Partington League for the time being.

Let's hope that this fantastic form continues for some time.

Well done boys!

Roman Experience

Year 3 enjoyed a two day 'Roman Experience' in school.

They made clay pots and oil lamps, learned some Latin words and had a lesson on Roman numerals. Later they wrote the story of Romulus and Remus, made wax tablets and scrolls which they

wrote on.

The final part of the time was spent enjoying a feast.

Thanks go to Mrs Ball who made the food and Mrs Sharma who helped to serve. It was a very enjoyable time and the experience greatly enhanced the children's learning.

Mrs Kiely and Mrs Jones say their Thank You's

After 15 years at Forest, it was a hard decision to retire and leave it all behind.

I will miss it very much but I take with me many happy memories of the children I have taught.

Thank you so much to all parents who contributed so generously to my leaving gift.

I will enjoy choosing something that will remind me of my time at Forest School.

Thank you again,

Congratulations to Year 5 pupil Charlotte who auditioned successfully and was invited to join the Halle Childrens Choir in Manchester. Charlotte sang for a panel of judges just before school ended for the summer and had a nervous few weeks awaiting the big news!

Also accepted into the choir was our former Head Girl, Phoebe,

who is now in Year 7 at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls.
Charlotte and Phoebe have taken on a substantial commitment with rehearsals each week and many performances throughout the year; some concerts are likely to be with the prestigious Halle Orchestra!
