Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

The Year 4 class is taught by Mr Francis, with the support of Mrs Howland, class Teaching Assistant. Mr. Francis finds teaching highly rewarding and loves seeing children grow in confidence and develop a genuine enthusiasm for learning. Along with their regular lessons, the children also benefit from specialist teachers in French, Music, Art, PE and Games, who bring energy and passion to each subject, sparking a love for learning in every area.

A Message from Mr. Francis:

“I strongly believe in fostering a growth mindset where children learn from their mistakes. Year 4 focuses on developing independence, encouraging students to make informed choices. We support children of all abilities, and with Mrs. Howland’s help, we ensure the needs of every individual are met.”

Classroom Environment

The Year 4 classroom is a vibrant and stimulating space that celebrates the children’s achievements and promotes independent learning. Learning walls provide support and language resources to help children enhance their work. We emphasise collaborative learning using fun, interactive methods that make each day memorable.

The Curriculum

Maths

In Maths, the children explore place value and number positions. Once they grasp these concepts, they learn to add and subtract numbers with any number of digits. We reinforce times tables through a friendly competition called “Champion’s League,” where students compete mainly to improve their personal best. We also cover fractions, decimals, and the properties of shapes.

English

Using a variety of texts and Alan Peat sentence structures, children explore thriller/tension writing, explanation texts, journey narratives, fantasy adventures, stories with a moral and newspaper writing.

History

In History, the children learn about fascinating topics, including The Great Plague of 1665, Off with Her Head (Tudor History) and The Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Geography

In Geography, we explore a village in India, American Road trip and Rivers.

Science

Science topics include: States of Matter, Sound, Animals and their habitats, Digestion and Electricity.

Relationships & PSHE

In PSHE the children learn about Relationships, Valuing differences, Keeping myself safe especially in the digital world, Rights and responsibilities, Being my best and Growing and changing.

Homework

Homework is set every evening and reinforces the day’s or week’s learning. It may include work in exercise books, research, interventions, or Google Classroom tasks. Children are expected to spend around 30 minutes on homework each night, along with 10 minutes of reading.

Trips

Year 4 students enjoy two educational trips to enhance their topic learning:

  • Eyam Village to explore the story of the plague
  • Ordsall Hall for Tudor history
