Our Lower Prep School provides children in Years 1 and 2 with a structured and engaging education, helping them build on the foundations established during their Early Years education.
As children move from our Early Years programme into Lower Prep, learning becomes more structured. Pupils are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their work, develop their knowledge across a broad range of subjects. With this encouragement and support, they become more confident in their ability to learn independently.
At the same time, our teachers ensure that children continue to enjoy school and feel supported as they adapt to new expectations.

Our Lower Prep School at Forest Prep
Our Lower Prep School covers Years 1 and 2, providing an important bridge between the Early Years and Upper Prep. During these two years, children develop academically, socially, and personally as they become more familiar with the routines and expectations of school.
Year 1
Year 1 marks an important step towards more structured learning. Children continue to develop their reading, writing, and mathematical understanding while broadening their knowledge.
Weekly swimming forms part of the Year 1 experience, while trips and practical activities give children opportunities to connect classroom learning with the wider world.
Year 2
In Year 2, children are encouraged to become increasingly organised and responsible for their learning. Classroom routines become more formal, with pupils working at their own desks and taking greater responsibility for their own work.
Homework expectations also increase, giving children an opportunity to practise skills outside the classroom and prepare for the greater independence expected as they move into Upper Prep.
Our Lower School Curriculum
Our Lower Prep curriculum gives children a broad and varied education, covering core subjects alongside creative, practical and specialist learning. Across Years 1 and 2, pupils develop their knowledge, communication and problem-solving skills while being encouraged to become increasingly confident in applying what they have learned.

Preparing for the Upper Prep School
By the end of Year 2, children have developed a stronger academic foundation alongside greater confidence and independence and are ready for the demands of Upper Prep. The move into Upper Prep brings increased subject depth, more demanding learning, and greater expectations, which the children are prepared and excited for.
