A Revamped Buddy System

At Forest, we know that some of the most powerful learning happens when children learn from one another. This year, our Buddy System has been given a fresh new twist, creating even more opportunities for children across the school to build friendships, share experiences, and grow together.

Nursery and Year 6
Our youngest and oldest pupils make a truly special pairing. Each week, Nursery and Year 6 children spend 30 minutes together in sessions carefully linked to both EYFS and KS2 PSHE goals. For our Nursery children, this is a magical time when they feel safe, supported, and inspired by their “big buddies.” For Year 6 pupils, it is a chance to show kindness, leadership, and responsibility as they help guide the very youngest in our Forest family.

Reception and Year 3
For the first time in Forest history, Year 3 are part of the popular buddy system. As Year 3 pupils move into Upper School, they’re ready to take on new responsibilities. Being a buddy allows them to step into that role with pride, while Reception children enjoy the excitement of being welcomed into the wider school community. There are also lots of shared learning opportunities with the topics they are learning about such as plastic pollution. For Reception parents, it’s a lovely glimpse into what’s to come as their children journey through Forest.

Year 2 and Year 5: Reading Friends
The very successful Year 2 and Year 5 ‘reading friends’ buddy system continues.. Each week, Year 2 pupils enjoy reading alongside their older friends, building fluency and confidence in a relaxed, supportive setting. At the same time, Year 5 pupils develop patience, mentoring skills, and a deeper appreciation of the joy that comes from sharing stories. Both year groups gain so much – and the smiles say it all.

A Community of Care and Connection
The Buddy System is about much more than weekly sessions; it reflects the heart of our Forest community. Whether in the Nursery or preparing to leave in Year 6, every child benefits from these special connections, making Forest not just a school, but a family.
