Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

The Year 2 class is led by Mrs Bradley, Class Teacher, and Mrs McClearn, Teaching Assistant. Mrs Bradley has been teaching Year 2 at Forest for the past six years and finds great joy in working with this age group. She loves how inquisitive the children are and takes pride in watching them grow throughout the year, preparing them for their continued journey into Upper School.

Alongside their class teachers, the children benefit from lessons with specialist teachers in French, Music, Art, PE and Games. These passionate subject experts bring excitement to the classroom, inspiring a genuine love for learning in each area.

In Year 2, children build their independence both academically and in everyday life skills. For instance, there’s a “tie and top button challenge” in the spring term, encouraging children to master self-care tasks. They also develop critical thinking and are encouraged to reflect on their academic progress, social interactions, and emotional well-being. By setting personal goals and embracing a positive growth mindset, they prepare for the increased demands of Year 3.

Classroom Environment

The Year 2 classroom is a calm and purposeful space, designed to challenge and engage the children. Each child has their own traditional desk with a flip lid, promoting responsibility for their belongings and fostering a sense of pride in their work area.

The Curriculum

The Year 2 curriculum is rich and varied, with a strong focus on English and Maths. Beyond these core subjects, the children explore fascinating topics in other areas. In History, they learn about The Great Fire of London, Florence Nightingale, and The Celts. In Geography, they study Mexico, the seaside, and life on an island. In Science, the focus is on electricity, plants, growth, forces, and healthy living.

Homework

Children in Year 2 receive homework three times a week, covering English, Maths, spellings, and reading.

Class Trips

Year 2 children enjoy several educational trips. In the autumn term, they visit Staircase House in Stockport to enhance their learning about The Great Fire of London. In the spring term, the class heads to Bury Fire and Rescue Training Centre, where they learn about the services that help keep us safe.

In March, the highlight of the year is a one-night residential trip to Burwardsley. There, the children delve into Celtic History by visiting a replica roundhouse, making dens in the forest, participating in an archaeological dig, and crafting willow-weaved fish and clay pots.
