Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

The Year 3 class is taught by Mrs Eley on Monday – Thursday, and Mr Booth (Headmaster) on Friday, both teachers are supported by Mrs Cooke, Year 3 Teaching Assistant. Mrs Eley is passionate about watching the children grow in confidence throughout the year, as they are given ample opportunities to develop a wide range of skills.

In addition to their class lessons, the children benefit from sessions with specialist teachers in French, Music, Art, PE and Games. These subject experts bring energy and enthusiasm to the classroom, sparking a genuine love for learning in each area.

Year 3 is an exciting transition into Key Stage Two. This marks a shift toward greater independence as the children explore various themes in different subjects. With plenty of support and encouragement, the children adjust to new routines, a longer school day, and an increased pace of learning.

Our Year 3 curriculum is stimulating, diverse, and designed to be enriching. A variety of teaching techniques ensures that every child can access their learning in a meaningful and engaging way.

Classroom Environment

The Year 3 classroom is full of character – not just because of the children but the staff as well! It’s a vibrant and welcoming space, where children feel both comfortable and energised to learn. Our classroom is a celebration of school life.

The Curriculum

English

In English, the children explore a variety of genres including explanation texts, play scripts, fiction, poetry, persuasive writing, and non-fiction. Grammar is also a key focus. Reading is essential for success, and children engage with a wide range of texts, reading both at school and at home. Reading records are checked daily to monitor progress, and we encourage participation in our Reading Quest scheme, which helps deepen understanding in an interactive way.

Maths

In Maths, the children work on the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and explore concepts like shape, measure, and data handling. Problem-solving is a key part of the curriculum, and children are encouraged to regularly practise their times tables. They can use TTRockstars to improve mental maths skills while enjoying building their profiles.

Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning

We also help the children develop reasoning skills as part of their preparation for 11+ examinations.

History

In History, we study the Romans and their influence on Britain, as well as the Vikings and Egyptians, making many cross-curricular connections.

Geography

Geography lessons focus on human and physical features of the local area and explore changes in the environment. The children also study pollution and its effect on climate change.

Science

Science topics include nutrition and balanced diets, the three types of skeletons and how muscles work – it’s fascinating! The children also learn about Rocks and Soils, Forces and Magnets, Light and Shadows, and Helping Plants Grow Well.

PSHE

Through the SCARF scheme, the children learn about daily life, cultures, and challenges, even covering financial topics like credit and debit. This spiral curriculum helps prepare them with essential life skills for the future.

Homework

Homework is assigned every night and typically due the next day. It’s varied to reinforce what has been learned in class, helping children consolidate their understanding.

Trips

Trips are an essential part of the Year 3 experience, enriching the children’s learning and sparking curiosity. Some trips include Manchester Museum, Grosvenor Museum, The Roman Town of Chester and Blue Planet Aquarium. We also host class theme days during the year based around the Romans and the celebration of the Chinese New Year.
