Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

The Year 5 class is taught by Mr Hyde (also deputy headteacher), supported by Mrs Johal, the teaching assistant. Mr Hyde has worked at Forest for twenty years. His passion for teaching comes from the enjoyment he gets from helping children become independent learners as they prepare for secondary schools.

Alongside their class teachers, the children benefit from lessons with specialist teachers in French, Music, Art, PE, and Games. These passionate subject experts bring excitement to the classroom, inspiring a genuine love for learning in each area.

Throughout year 5 the teachers develop the children’s independence and organisation so that the children enjoy learning and become confident, resilient and to relish a challenge!

Classroom Environment

The Year 5 motto is Work Hard, Play Hard and this underpins everything. The children try their very best within the classroom but then enjoy all the other sporting, musical and artistic opportunities that Forest provides.

The Curriculum

Covering all aspects of the Y5 national curriculum in maths, English and reasoning and when appropriate advancing beyond this to match the ability of our children and to create an environment of challenge and curiosity.

Beyond these core subjects, the children explore fascinating topics in other areas. In History, the Ancient Greeks and Royal Family. In Science, Space, Forces, Changing State and Gases Around Us. In Geography Water, Rivers , Traffic and Mapwork.

Homework

Homework is set every evening. This is based around topics covered in class and tends to be around maths, English and Reasoning. It is approximately 30 minutes an evening.

Trips

Year 5 go on three class trips to consolidate learning. They go to Jodrell Bank (linked to science), Royal Cheshire Show – to link in with history and a week long activity based residential in either Shropshire or Derbyshire. This residential trip is invaluable in helping children to develop a strong sense of independence, bond further with their peers and teachers whilst also developing team work skills.
