Year 4’s Mesmerising Museum Trip

Our history topic this half term is all about the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We arrived at the beautiful Albert Docks on a gorgeous, sunny morning and headed towards the museum.

The first exhibition we visited was all about life in West Africa. Our children studied sculptures, artefacts and quotes based on the notion of slavery and what freedom means.

Moving to the transportation area, our class saw real shackles and chains that slaves were forced to wear and they were able to read diaries that some of the captains kept. One of our children even spoke Mandarin to a group of Chinese tourists!

Our final part of the tour was to the civil rights area. We learnt about how the law changed and how black people fought for equal rights. I think the children enjoyed listening to the jazz and blues section the most – trying to prise them away from this area was a challenge!

We had a wonderful trip and the children’s appreciation of this dark period of history has certainly grown. Well done Year 4!
