Celebrating 20 Years of Mrs Johal

In our latest interview, Mrs Johal reflects on her journey at the school, from first visiting Forest in 1996, as a parent looking for a school for her daughter. Many years later she is still a huge part of our Forest family.
At Forest, we are fortunate to have many long standing members of staff like Mrs Johal. Their dedication brings stability for our children and means we have staff who truly know #TheForestWay inside and out. It’s a real reflection of what a special place Forest is to learn, grow and be part of.

How did your Forest journey start?

My journey with Forest began in 1996 when I first visited the school while looking around for my daughter. From the moment I stepped inside, it felt like one big family.

That same warm, welcoming atmosphere is still there today, a unique feeling you almost wish you could bottle.

What are some of your favourite memories from the last 20 years?

I have fond memories of delivering ‘Brain Gym’ sessions to the Nursery children, which is where my career at Forest started.

I also have wonderful memories of our Centenary Celebrations. Looking through old photographs to create the Centenary photo board brought back so many happy memories of events and familiar faces of children from over the years.

20 years is a great length of service, what do you love about supporting teaching at Forest?

The part of my job I love most is seeing the children grow in confidence and develop a real love of learning. At Forest, we celebrate so many achievements, both big and small, and it’s wonderful to see the children thrive throughout their journey here. Watching them start in Nursery at just two years old and then leave at the end of Year 6 as confident eleven year olds is incredibly rewarding. I feel very proud to have been part of that journey.

What do you think Forest prep does particularly well compared to other schools?

Of course, we have strong academic results, which are very important. However, what really sets Forest Prep apart is the wide range of opportunities we provide to ensure our children are happy in school, because happy children learn and thrive. There are lots of music, sport and community engagement opportunities.

Our school environment is also truly unique and has a wonderful family feel. The children help to look after our school pets, including tortoises, pygmy goats and our school dog, Maggie, which adds to our special family.

What are you most proud of from your 20 years in education?

Being nominated for ‘TA of the Year’ in the TES Education Awards and shortlisted among the final eight in the country was the greatest honour for me. Travelling to London with my family to attend the TES Awards evening was an incredibly special experience, and it’s a moment I know I will never forget.

How do you think teaching assistants make a difference in a school?

Teaching assistants make a huge difference in schools by providing support to both pupils and teachers. At Forest, we are fortunate to have a teaching assistant in every class, creating a teacher pupil ratio of 1:12, and an even lower ratio in our Early Years setting. This allows children to receive more individual attention and tailored support.

Teaching assistants help provide individual support for pupils, particularly those who may need extra guidance with their learning. They ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.

If you had to describe your 20 years at the school in three words, what would they be?
