Early Years Curriculum

Every week children from Reception and Kindergarten visit our specialist Art Atudio to see Mrs Thomson. In small groups the children take part in Art and Design sessions lessons, led by our specialist teacher. Lots of fun is had by all!

Children at Forest begin learning and enjoying French in the Nursery class and this continues throughout their school years. Through rhyme and songs, they become familiar with the sounds and intonation of French in a similar way to a native French child’s learning. In the lessons, they listen to the spoken language and show their understanding by joining in and responding.

Frequent repetition enables them to feel comfortable and ensures that their introduction to the language is both positive and pleasurable.

Music plays a very important part in the curriculum at Forest. All children, from Nursery to Year 6, enjoy Music lessons each week with Ms Wellings, the school’s specialist Director of Music. During these lessons, pupils explore the various elements of music and develop their skills in playing, composing and listening to different musical styles.

Singing is one aspect of Music that all Forest students especially enjoy. Songs are an integral part of all music lessons and are used to entertain, educate and encourage the children.  Pupils sing regularly in class, at assemblies and in the playground as well!

Every week children take part in PE and games lessons, led by our specialist sports teacher and coaches. A wide range of extra curricular activities is on offer to pupils, some activities are for fun, others enable children to train and compete at a higher level. In Early Years, the focus is on physical development games, gymnastics and dance.

In Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception the children have the opportunity to use a range of educational software and enjoy a wide variety of Computing activities to encourage confidence when using the computer.

As the children grow in confidence, during Reception their Computer skills are developed further using our whole-school scheme Kapow and Discovery Education Coding. The children begin to use software to support other subjects through the use of a different learning style.
