Year 6 were fortunate to have Mrs Needham and a colleauge of hers from Lloyds Bank, in class last week, running a pilot workshop on finances, as part of mathematics.
This session was based around a scenario of a family wishing to save for a holiday in Australia. Children explored simple financial documents (bank statement, bill and shopping receipt), using information from these to complete a budget sheet and then consider how the family could cut down their spending and save money. They considered the importance of keeping track of money and budgeting.
In a second activity, children helped the family by calculating exchange rates for their Australian trip.
In addition, the children learnt about the role money plays in their own and others’ lives, including how to manage their money and about being a critical consumer.
Thanks to Mrs Needham for taking the time to come in and give the children a taste of real life problem solving.
