Sports

Sport plays a significant role in school life at Forest. Every child from Nursery through to Year 6 participates in a weekly lesson taught by our specialist PE teachers, Mr. Rimmer and Mrs. Stokes. Their expertise allows them to nurture each child’s development over the years, while getting to know their individual needs and strengths.

Our approach to sport emphasises fun and participation for all. Fundamental skills are introduced through simple, manageable tasks that are then incorporated into small-sided and fun games. As children progress through the school, they focus on applying these skills in team situations, learning to perform under increasing pressure.

Sports Journey: Nursery to Year 6

Starting from the age of 2 through to Reception, children engage in ‘movement play,’ learning to move for fun through games like tag. This helps them develop balance and coordination.  They also start to use balls of varying sizes, learning how to throw and catch properly. These core skills lay the foundation for when they start to learn how to play sports in Reception onwards.

In Reception, children are introduced to a variety of sports, including hockey, gymnastics, basketball, handball, athletics, and cricket. In Years 1 and 2, they continue to develop these skills and also participate in a weekly dance lesson taught by a specialist dance teacher.

As children enter Upper School, they have a weekly PE lesson focused on skill development, along with a 90-minute Games lesson, where they transfer these skills into competitive team sports. These Games lessons are held at Timperley Sports Club, which offers state-of-the-art sports facilities.

In Years 3 to 6, the children are introduced to an even wider range of sports, including hockey, tennis, orienteering, athletics, rounders, cricket, tag rugby, football, lacrosse, baseball, dodgeball, and more. In Years 5 and 6, netball is added to their Games lessons. The PE specialist teachers continue to assist the children in transferring skills from one sport to another.

Sport Competitions

Children start to compete in ‘friendly’ competitions against other local schools from year 1 up to Year 3. When children reach Year 4, they have the opportunity to compete in various sports competitions, which is an exciting milestone and they are always extremely proud to represent their school. Our teams compete against other schools regionally and sometimes nationally in ISA tournaments

Sports Days

Every year, children from Nursery to Year 6 participate in Sports Day during the summer term. Upper School Sports Day is held at Timperley Athletics Club, where the children compete on a professional track. They compete for their house, and the winning house is awarded the prestigious Margaret Bowie Trophy.

Swimming

Starting in Year 1, all students participate in weekly swimming lessons, taught by professional swimming instructors alongside our PE teacher, Mr. Rimmer. This ensures that every child develops strong swimming skills as part of their physical education.

Sport Facilities

At Forest, we are proud to offer excellent sports facilities. Our facilities include a full-size outdoor netball court, an all-weather synthetic grass area, a grass field, and a hardstanding play area. Upper School Games lessons are held at Timperley Sports Club, which features two full-sized, floodlit Artificial Turf pitches, ideal for football, hockey, lacrosse, and many other sports.

The Value of Sport at Forest

At Forest, we truly believe in the benefits that sport brings to both the physical and mental development of our Foresters. Playing sport with each other develops an inbuilt sense of team spirit, one of the values of being a true Forester.
