Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

The Year 6 class is taught by Mrs Knowles, with support from Mrs Howland. Together, they create a dynamic and engaging environment. In addition to their class teachers, the children benefit from specialist teachers in French, Music, Art, PE, and Games, where passionate subject experts inspire a love of learning.

A Message from Mrs Knowles:

“We set high expectations and aspirations for our Year 6 children, encouraging them to embody our motto, ‘The Forest Way.’ Our focus is on delivering a high-quality education across the curriculum, enhanced by enrichment opportunities both in and outside the classroom. Mrs. Howland and I truly make a dream team.”

Mrs Knowles

The curriculum is designed to be child-centred, focusing on their interests and challenging them with engaging activities. Feedback from both teachers and peers is used to help the children improve their work, and model examples (WAGOLL) are provided to guide them. Classroom displays feature prompts for spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar to support learning.

Classroom Environment

The Year 6 classroom is a vibrant, organised, and welcoming space that enriches the children’s learning experience. It fosters independence and serves as both a learning resource and a place to celebrate students’ work, directly contributing to raising standards.

The Curriculum

English

Children explore Michael Morpurgo’s works, using them to create diary entries, letters, poetry, and more.

Reading is a key focus and children are encouraged to read every day, in order to give themselves the best chance of success in the comprehension paper. It demands a greater emphasis on your child’s ability to define vocabulary, ability to interpret, and make inferences.

Maths

Year 6 builds on previous knowledge, focusing on number, place value, and operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Topics also include fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, algebra, shapes, and statistics, preparing the children for advanced calculations.

PSHE

PSHE in Year 6 prepares students for life’s challenges and opportunities. Topics include identity, relationships, career aspirations, online safety, and the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, ensuring they make informed decisions as they grow.

Science

The children explore topics such as Animals, including Humans, Evolution and Inheritance, Light, Electricity, and Classification of Living Things.

History

Year 6 History deepens students’ understanding of British, world, and local history, examining Britain’s impact on the wider world and vice versa, fostering historical awareness and critical thinking.

Geography

By the end of the year, children will confidently locate countries and cities, understand geographic features, and use maps, globes, and compasses. They’ll also explore the significance of global positions like the Equator and time zones.

Homework

English and Maths homework is assigned on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Children also learn weekly spellings, complete research assignments, and participate in buddy work for homework.

Trips

Year 6 children enjoy several educational trips, including:

  • Christmas Trip to Tatton
  • Evacuee Trip
  • Buddy Trip (part of a Year 6 and Reception buddy scheme)
  • Plus a week long activity based residential in either Shropshire or Derbyshire. This residential trip is invaluable in helping children to develop a strong sense of independence, bond further with their peers and teachers whilst also developing teamwork skills.
