Year 1 have made a fantastic start to Key Stage 1, completing their first week with enthusiasm, determination and an impressive approach to learning.
From the moment they arrived in the classroom, the children have demonstrated #theforestway of doing things. They have been engaged in their learning, shown great curiosity and continually asked questions, while also being kind and very polite. They have embraced our broad and varied curriculum, enjoying trips to the art room, learning French and taking part in active PE sessions.
It has certainly been a busy first week, with every minute put to good use:
In Maths, the children have been developing their understanding of numbers by counting forwards and backwards from 0–20, ordering numbers from lowest to highest and focusing on counting accurately.
Phonics has continued to be an important part of the children’s daily routine. Lessons have focused on the sounds ss, ff, zz, ll, ck and nk. Regular sessions provide pupils with plenty of opportunities to secure their sounds, helping to develop their confidence and improve their reading.
In English, the children have begun exploring what makes each of us unique. Using the lovely colourful rhyming book, Super Duper You as their hook, they brainstormed adjectives and vocabulary to describe themselves before beginning their own writing.
The children have also been busy exploring the wider curriculum. In Geography, they considered the question “What is Geography?” and explored the places around them, including a walk around the school environment. They also produced some brilliant writing about their holiday news, which showed off their exceptional writing skills.
History introduced the idea that everyone has a history. The children explored their own lives and families by creating family pictures and beginning their own personal timelines..
In Science, the children created self-portraits and labelled different parts of the body. They also began investigating their senses through questions such as, “What do we use our eyes for?”
The week also included Computing, where the children began becoming familiar with the keyboard, practising how to log on and off and exploring a drawing application. Alongside their classroom learning, Year 1 also headed off to Altrincham Leisure Centre for their first weekly swimming lesson with their peers. They will continue with weekly swimming lessons throughout their school days with us.
It has been a highly productive first couple of weeks, and the children should be incredibly proud of the positive start they have made to Year 1.
