Character Education may be a current focus in education, but it has always been at the heart of life at Forest School and what #theforestway is all about. We encourage children to demonstrate kindness, respect and responsibility in everyday actions, from holding doors open for others to showing exceptional manners and consideration for both their friends and staff.
This year, one of the school’s key priorities has been to foster engaged and responsible citizens in all of our pupils. As part of developing our Character Education programme further, we have provided children with a wide range of meaningful opportunities throughout the school year.
Our journey began with a Community Assembly, led by Harriet F in Year 6, which helped children understand what community means and recognise the important role they already play within our Forest community.
Through our Food Bank Harvest Donation Drive, pupils have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of giving back and supporting those in need within our local area.
We have increased visits to Newhaven Care Home, giving children valuable opportunities to build relationships across generations while developing empathy, social confidence and respect for older members of the community.
The children have taken part in regular organised litter picking activities throughout the year, as we wanted to encourage pupils to take pride in their local environment, while reinforcing responsibility and active participation within the wider community.
During National Gardening Week, our EYFS children took part in a Sunflower Growing Competition, learning how caring for plants can support local wildlife, while developing an understanding of responsibility towards the natural world.
Finally, our Year 6 pupils supported gardening projects at Pickering Lodge Park, helping to care for a valued community space, while building teamwork, environmental awareness and a sense of pride in their local area.
Through these experiences, we continue to nurture children who will leave Forest School not only prepared for academic success, but as well rounded individuals.
