We’re ready for the 11+ changes

With the Trafford Grammar School Consortium introducing a new assessment framework, we have reviewed our 11+ Preparation Programme to ensure we are preparing our pupils for the changes ahead.

A strong English and Maths Curriculum

The new assessment will focus on the Key Stage 2 English and Maths curriculum. Our aim has always been to develop strong English and Maths knowledge and skills in the children, so this will continue to be a key focus of our teaching and preparation.

The importance of Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning

We will also continue to develop pupils’ verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. We believe these help children to develop important critical thinking skills that are valuable well beyond the 11+ and will support them throughout their education, including in assessments such as the CATS tests taken at secondary school.

Newly appointed specialist English teacher

As part of our updated 11+ preparation, we have also appointed Mrs Fielding as our new English Specialist Teacher in Year 5. Mrs Fielding works with all Year 5 pupils in small groups, providing focused teaching and support to further develop their English skills and confidence.

A gradual approach

Our 11+ preparation is not something that begins immediately before an entrance examination. Instead, we build the skills and confidence required progressively starting in Year 2 and building year on year.

Year 6 Advantage

Year 6 remains a very important year, with another year of learning and development ahead after the entrance exams. It is therefore important that academic standards continue to be maintained, so that when our pupils walk through the gates of their chosen secondary school, they do so having continued to learn, develop and excel.

With the pressure of the entrance exams behind them, pupils can embrace “the Year 6 advantage at Forest”. There are so many ways for our pupils to thrive, whether academically, through Sport, the Arts and Music, or through the many experiences and responsibilities that Year 6 brings, including our residential trip.

Prepared for the future

As the 11+ changes, we are adapting our preparation while continuing to do what we have always done by preparing children for the next stage of their education, not just the next test.
